Animal Cruelty: Furs

Animal furs are well loved by people who enjoy their soft, gorgeous coat. Nothing wrong with that, right? Maybe the fact that the fur industry kills over 50 million animals a year might sway your opinion. Trapped in cages for the short time of their lives, to be killed by gassing, poisoning, electrocution, breaking of the neck, or even by shoving a red hot iron rod into their anus.

So if the act of creating these furs are so cruel, why does it continue? Perhaps most people are just oblivious. Or maybe they just don't care. And the people who slaughter these animals do not even think about their rights. Why do people find it's okay to kill animals? When an animal kills a human, everyone flips and the animal executed immediately. Yet animals are killed by humans by the millions each year.

I personally feel that animal slaughter is justified by the fact that humans feel superior to other animals, because we are "intelligent". And if animals cannot speak up for themselves, there is nothing wrong with doing away with them for our own benefit.

Animals are suffering an injustice daily due to slaughter, for such an egotistical reason. Is a fur coat that could easily be replaced with a high-quality material that is warmer than fur worth all this torture?

  1. I just don't understand the fur industry. Fur is soft and warm--but let's be honest; does anyone really need to be that warm? I mean, in arctic or in a sub-zero climate where that extra warmth would make the difference, fur has its place.

Certain types of fur have special benefits: wolf and wolverine fur will not frost! Fur coats trap heat in between the follicles and create a barrier against the cold air while keeping warm air inside. The stigma against fur stems from unwillingness to accept man's dominance over nature.

But with dominion comes responsibility. It just doesn't get that cold in the continental United States. There are almost no conditions in which one actually needs to wear fur. Fur is excessive for the average consumer; a wool, fleece, or polyester coat would suffice just fine.

  2. When I came across the execution methods that Kayla wrote, only one word came to mind, torture. Putting a "red hot iron rod into their anus," is awful to think about. I understand that animals are used for many different things, and I am not arguing to stop the killing. Using furs to make warm coats, and using animal meat for food is sensible; however, the way of killing these animals should be changed. Some methods may be painless, but how would any human enjoy a hot iron rod, going where it shouldn't. Do you believe the sacrifice of these animals for the uses of their body is right, if the methods of executing these animals are changed?

  3. The food industry kills 3 times that yearly and we don't even use half the food or the furs from those animals. The main reason people find it okay to kill animals is that animals are not of the same species. As being animals, humans are obligated to promote the betterment of their own species. Yes, the methods may be inhumane, but the industry will keep treating animals in this manner as long as people desire their furs.

  4. When I saw this picture I almost cried. The way that humans treat animals is really a sad thing. We are taking advantage of them and using them for our on well-being while ignoring what they need. I am truly disgusted at the fur industry and how it treats the animals. It is bad enough that we kill the poor innocent animals for jackets. I am a true animal lover and I believe that it is wrong to use them for coats and to raise them for food. I wish life could be like it was with the Native Americans. They only killed when they had to and used as much of the animal as they could. They appreciated nature and respected animals. As of today we have no respect for anything but humans and even some humans are left out. Killing an animal for fur is wrong and should be banned. I found this video and website very shocking and depressing http://features.peta.org/ChineseFurFarms/index.asp. I think it would add shock to anyone who watched it.

  6. This blog touches me deeply, I absolutely love animals and just hearing about all of this happening makes me want to go out and help these poor animals. I feel that humans should be punished for the things that they are doing to animals just like animals are punished for doing things to humans. I agree with everything that you said in this blog and I feel like humans who care should step up and try to do something to help the animals that are being treated badly.

  7. This article is very interesting. The way the auther wrote it kept me reading 4rm beginning to end. I was expecting to read about the crulty of animalss and I learned that and so much more. I love the point made about “When an animal kills a human, everyone flips and the animal executed immediately.” This is so true. I feel that animals do have a voice an they can tell u what they like and don’t like, or if we are hurting them or not, but we just don’t listen. In many cultures, including native American, they would only kill an animal if it had to be, and they reason why they wore animal skin was not jus for warmth, but they did not want any part of the animal to go to waste, now were have better clothes and don’t really need any of the fur!
