Government vs. Katrina

There are a lot of things people don't know about the government and what they did when hurricane Katrina hit. They fail to realize all the good the government done did for them during the situation and after but since most of the people are just stating all the bad that happened people start to think the government is no good for us. If you really pay attention to what happen then you would understand that the government couldn't really do nothing to avoid this problem because no one in they right mind would be able to plan something like that and have a plan to stop it from happening. They did do all what they can to help as many people like in the begin when they found out it was all going to happen they told the people and wanted to make them all leave but a lot could not cause they didn't have the right amount of money to leave. Then during the fact they found out a lot of people stayed so they sent out rescue groups to save the lives of the ones who stayed. Even when the hurricane Katrina was still there some people still risked there lives to save people they don't know because everybody was blaming the government for way went down.
Now if we look at what the stats show for what the government sent out during the hurricane and after you would say dang they did a good job. Scott Price told the news reporter "The scale of operations during the Katrina response defies imagination and the statistics generated are almost unbelievable. Search and rescue operations alone saved 24,135 lives from imminent danger, usually off the roofs of the victims’ homes as flood waters lapped at their feet. Coast Guardsmen “evacuated to safety” 9,409 patients from local hospitals. In total, 33,545 souls owed their lives to the men and women of the nation’s oldest continuous-going sea service, nearly equaling the number of persons the Coast Guard saves during a calendar year". See if people would have actually looked at these stats they would feel bad because they would realize now that the government did try and help more then what people think so some would change they though on the government and others would still think the same. Also the government did not have to send the coast guards out there to save them people because they government did tell all the people to leave so it wasn't they fault that a lot decided to stay so think about that.

  1. I disagree with this response greatly. The government put up a big front concerning Hurricane Katrina. Former FEMA director Michael Brown stated that "He did not think the government response to the disaster was going well when President Bush praised him on national TV and told him he was doing a "heck of a job." This is coming directly from one of President Bush's aides. This man later lost his job when people flew over New Orleans and saw hungry people on rooftops waiting to be helped. The government may have enacted a plan to do a little something but still it left many homeless and hungry. I feel that these little package plans were a little front for people's eye so anybody wouldn't get in trouble for little involvement in national crisis.

  2. ok well you do have a good point but as it was stated the government sent out the coast guard and it save thousand they did not have to do that for them. also after hurricane katrina they started to fix new orleans right away. this is information also from fema and it says "The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) repaired and restored 220 miles of floodwalls and levees since September 2005. With a few exceptions, the New Orleans hurricane protection system is in equal or better condition than it was when Katrina hit. For example, levees and flood walls have been armored to protect against erosion from possible overtopping in several areas, and pumping stations are being storm proofed. Floodgates have been added at the outfall canals to protect against storm surge and a tree cutting program on existing levees for protection is ongoing". see so you cant say the government havent been trying to do nothing since hurricane katrina if they are still doing all these repairs for them right now. but you did stat a good point though i give you that.

  3. I would have to agree and disagree with your post. The government does deserve more credit than they got from the people, but they also could of done more for the people in Louisiana. More than half of my family lives there and getting to see the after math of the storm there was a lot more that should of been done. These things consist of having more back up, more nurses and doctors willing to be there and help out, pull all the ammunition out of the stores to help with crime
(http://www.parapundit.com/archives/002980.html). I would also like to point out the fact that many people blamed President Bush for what happened after Katrina. He was not the reason FEMA took so long to get to the people. Because of checks and balances he did not have the authority to send FEMA. Congress are the ones that had the say for when FEMA was sent to Louisiana.

  4. i agree with what your saying about the fact that they should have had more back up, more doctors and nurses and ammuntion for the crime going on at the time but you fail to realize they sent as many people as they could to try and help out cause as you remeber even though hurricane katrina hit them real bad there where other thing going on in the country like war and other crap so they just couldnt just send all or even most of the doctors and nurses and back up because of all the other crap thats going wrong and united states of america.
but i have to disagree with you on the fact that you said its not bush fault because it is his fault if he would have atleast sent out a request or tired to have a meeting about the situation then they probably would have had more then just a couple of people there but i do agree that it is the congress fault as well because they also suppose to protect this country so they shouldnt have had no problem to send more people to help out. this link also shows what they could have dont before the hurricane if they really tired or though it out (http://www.parapundit.com/archives/002980.html)
