Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act ("DREAM Act")

There are about three million students that graduate high school each year. But not all the students that graduate high school can continue their education, by attending a University or College. Any student that finishes High School should be able to go to college and continue their education if they want to. But there are around 65,000 students that don’t get this opportunity. Now the question that comes to mind is why they don’t have the opportunity. The answer is simple, they are illegal immigrants and they have a hard time continuing their education because of the financial problems. And they can’t get scholarships because most of them require that the applicant be legally inside of the United States.

That’s where the DREAM ACT, Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors ACT, becomes important to those illegal students. The DREAM ACT will give the students that qualify a temporary residency. With this they will be able to apply for students loans, and participate in work studies. However they will not be eligible to receive the Pell Grant. They will only have the temporary residency for a total of six years. After they receive their temporary residency, they will need to complete one of the three options to become a resident of the United States. The first option is that they graduate from a 2-year community college, or that they complete at least two years towards a four year degree. The last option is that they join the U.S. military, and serve for two years. Another requirement is that the applicant be of good moral character. After this they will be able to fulfill their dreams of becoming someone in the U.S. The DREAM Act will help many students that want to further their education.

The DREAM Act hasn’t been passed in congress. In the last meeting in congress the DREAM Act was just a couple votes short in the senate for it to be passed. The question that many people are asking is should the DREAM Act be passed by congress. What benefits will the DREAM Act bring to the illegal students? Will it affect the legal students when applying for student loans, or work studies? The DREAM Act will make society better because it will have more educated people in the community. It will make more people want to have better jobs, thus they will make more money. That will lower crime rates, because is someone has enough money to provide for their family they will not need to rob anyone else. The DREAM Act should be passed, to help all the students that cant further their education.

  1. In my first post to my blog, I introduced the DREAM Act. The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, or “DREAM Act,” will legalize all students who graduate high school, but are illegal immigrants in the United States. They will have to meet certain prerequisites in order to get a temporary residency. The only problem is that congress has not passed the DREAM Act. According to immigrationpolicy.org, “To date, the DREAM Act has at least 39 co-sponsors in the Senate and 124 in the House.” Which means it is still short from being passed in congress and making it official to help out all the high school graduates who can’t continue their education. Many of the illegal students, who graduate, have been in the U.S. for a long time, sometimes since infancy. Therefore they sometimes don’t even remember their native country, and they tend to be fluent in English. So why can’t these students get the opportunity to go to college. The DREAM Act, will give these student the chance they all desire to go college. The article says that, “an undocumented Harvard student in early June was detained.” Harvard President Drew Faust stated that the DREAM Act serves as a “lifeline to these students who are already working hard in our middle and high schools and living in our communities by granting them the temporary legal status that would allow them to pursue post secondary education." This shows the support that many organizations, schools, and just you every day people have for the passing of the DREAM Act. That is why the DREAM Act need to be passed, because it will benefit many people who just want to go to school and become something in life.

  2. I agree, I think the DREAM act is a great opportunity to bring about a more effective society. If someone wishes to better themselves by becoming a productive and beneficial member to the society, who are we to stop them? After all, a portion of American History's successful leaders were citizens of other countries who came to America in search of better opportunity. Many countries lack the opportunity of higher education, one that we as Americans can often take for granted. If we as a country, can bring in the opportunity to enrich the lives of others through education and citizenship, we should take advantage of it.

  3. As stated in my first two entries of my blog post, this blog is about the DREAM Act. As we know the DREAM Act will benefit about 2 million illegal students in the United States. But the question is how this will affect the rest of the United States. There are several points listed in the previous blogs, like the lowering in crime rate and having more educated people in the country. But a huge topic at this time and moment would have to be the economy. This brings us back to the DREAM Act, and how it would affect the economy. According to businesstoday.org the Dream Act will significantly benefit the economy in a positive way. It says it, “would benefit the economy significantly by increasing the income of affected immigrants, thereby stimulating spending and investment. A person, who graduates from college, will increase his or her pretax income at age 30 by more than $13,000 per year. A single person with a bachelor’s degree who earns an average $60,000 of taxable income will contribute $9,640 to taxes and welfare annually; in a 40-year span he/she will have contributed $385,000.” Numbers like this, showing how the DREAM Act would benefit the United States, should help congress pass this bill into action. There are no negative sides to the DREAM Act, which means that it will only be of good if passed in congress. The U.S. is always looking for professionals from other countries to come and work here, but with the passing of the DREAM Act the competition will be within us to get jobs. The multilingual and bicultural aspects of many of the students that will be affected by the DREAM Act will make the United States a successful nation for the years to come.
