The Miami Heat, Contenders or Pretenders?

There is a new mindset in Miami and that mindset is to never lose. If you dropped almost 50 milllion dollars for just three players annual salary, you would expect to win too. In the 2010 NBA offseason the Miami Heat aquired two more superstars to add their roster. These two stars include Chris Bosh, formally of the Toronto Raptors,  and, potentially the best player of all time, LeBron James. These two will team up with Dwayne Wade to run through the 2010 regular season with ease and win the NBA Championship, or so people would say? These three players are all superstars in their own respects, and have known nothing in their NBA tenyer, but to carry their teams on their backs. Each one of these players scored all of the points on their former teams and where never told to take a "back seat" in a game. Now they are all on the same team, which means two of the three will no longer be at this superstar status. A championship team always consists of two types of player, a superstar and a bunch of role players that just help the superstar win the game for them. The question is can these former superstars embrace this role player status or will this whole season for the Heat go down the drain? The Heat are to big, they have too many assperations, and their dreams are out of reach. These players will play well together for a couple of games, but then they will start to get greedy. Each one of them feels as though they have the right to be the superstar, which cooks up a recipe for disaster for the Heat. The Heat have all the talent iin the world, but they have no team and it takes a TEAM to win an NBA championship.

  1. I am a huge NBA basketball fan. When I saw your article it immediately caught my attention. I have always been a huge Dwayne Wade supporter, but ever since 2006 when Miami Heat won a National Championship I feel like they have become in a since a let down to many fans like my self. Now with Chris Bosh and LeBron James I feel like the heat is getting their new boost to become that great team that everyone thought they should be.
I feel like your title was great for the concept of your article. It grabbed my attention and made me want to read more. Your picture showed the three super stars together which was a great visual aid for this article. It was easy to follow, and you wrote on a topic that most sport fans already have formed an opinion about, and can relate to your article.
I personally do not aggress with your thoughts though. I feel like its time for super stars to play together on the same team. I think all three of these guys are old enough and have played the game long enough to understand the meaning of team, and to know that there is no “I” in the word team. I would like to know more about what other critics say along with comments from the three players and how they feel about the up coming season. I liked your article though it definitely caught my attention. I cannot wait to see how you expand on this!

  2. Since I am I huge fan of basketball, this article is naturally interesting to me. The Miami Heat is a team that I enjoy watching; the addition of LeBron James and Chris Bosh has only increased my interest in them. The title poses the question whether the Heat will be “Contenders or Pretenders”, and my say is that they will be contenders. As said in the blog the Heat have three superstars on their team, which may be of concern to some people, but in the Heat’s case these players have played together before. According to the article “Olympic Men’s Roster Loaded with NBA Players” (http://www.nba.com/news/mensrosters_080809.html ), back in 2008 Dwayne Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh, along with other NBA superstars, were on the United States National Team together. In the blog it says that “A championship team always consists of two types of player, a superstar and a bunch of role players that just help the superstar win the game for them”, but in the case of the 2008 U.S. National Team, which all three of the Heat’s superstars played on, they proved this to be false. According to the article “Olympic Basketball/2008 Olympics” (http://www.insidehoops.com/olympics.shtml) in 2008 the United Sates went undefeated to win the gold medal.
An NBA game is 48 minutes long. For a struggling team relying on its superstar, 48 minutes is a long time for one player to carry the team on its back. That is less likely to be an issue for the Miami Heat. The luxury of having three players who can create offense for themselves and other is a huge advantage. In the first game this season player Dwayne Wade suffered a minor injury, without the help of two other big name players, LeBron James and Chris Bosh, the Heat may not have been able to win that game. The Miami Heat is currently undefeated with a record of 2-0, and they will continue to have a successful season

  3. As I was looking at the different blogs, this photo intrigued me and the topic/subject resonates my thoughts on this matter. That is, it takes a team to win championships. In the photo the three high salary Miami Heat stars are greeting fans without any other team members around, as if to suggest they will win without anyone else. There is no doubt that Dewayne Wade, Chris Bosh, and Lebron James are great NBA basketball players, but spending huge amounts of money on players will not guarantee a championship. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=dw-mlbspending100907
I am a former high school athlete and a college and professional sports fan. I know very well that it takes a team to win and also that no matter how good you are, that any team can defeat any other team on and given day regardless of the amount of their payroll.

  4. Even though I am not a huge basketball fan, being born in Los Angeles I have always been a Lakers fan. During basket ball season I always make sure to follow up on them. Weather I check on my phone, computer, or on television I always keep track of the Lakers. So when I heard that the Miami Heat had acquired such a strong team with 3 superstars in basketball it made me a bit worried at first. With such a strong team it will be hard for the Lakers to win this year’s NBA title. However if the tree players, Wade, Bosh, and James, begin to try to play better than the other, it could back fire. According to nbaprimetime.com the heat only have 55.5% chance of winning the NBA title. Now even though that is a high number it is not that secure for they could win or lose. And with other teams with high percentages to win I think that the Miami Heat will have a great team, but will fall short to winning the NBA championship. At least for this year, the team will start off good, but it will soon be faced with problems from the 3 players that are supposed to make them win. But as soon as they learn to play as team, well anything can happen. I still believe the Lakers will win it again this year.

  5. This article and its title grabbed my attention because I could remember over the summer waiting on the press conference that LeBron James was going to have about his new contract. The superstars of this team was a great visual. However, I do not agree with the overall article because yes, it is three superstars on the team but that does not always mean that egos are going to get in the way. What it comes down to is how bad they want the ring. That is the main goal for the team and especially LeBron because we all know that is the goal for every player in the NBA. I believe that egos will be pushed aside for the championship ring.
